This summer, our CPASS Foundation STEMM Scholars Academy gave high school sophomores an exciting glimpse into the world of healthcare during their visit to Midwestern University’s Downers Grove Campus. Designed to empower racially and ethnically underrepresented students in Illinois who are passionate about science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM), our program offers hands-on experiences and valuable insights to help shape their academic and career paths.

Welcomed by Dr. Coretta Patterson, Dean of the Proposed College of Veterinary Medicine – Illinois, our scholars heard her inspiring story as one of the few Black deans of veterinary medicine in the country. Dr. Patterson emphasized the importance of excelling in science and math and encouraged students to gain experience through volunteering and extracurricular activities.

The day was packed with engaging activities across healthcare disciplines. Our students drilled and filled mock teeth in a dentistry session, explored ultrasound technology, and even learned how eye exams can reveal conditions like diabetes and cancer. Their enthusiasm was contagious, with some students reconsidering their career paths after these immersive experiences.

Our program’s mission to increase diversity in STEMM fields was highlighted throughout the visit. From exploring careers at prestigious institutions like the Museum of Science and Industry to hands-on learning at Midwestern University, our scholars are on a path to success in healthcare. We can’t wait to see where their journeys take them next!
